Guidelines

The 11th Radio Astronomy Winter School for College and University Students (RAWSC-2018), will be held at Radio Physics Laboratory (RPL), a joint initiative of National Centre for Radio Astrophysics - Tata Intitute of Fundamental Research (NCRA-TIFR Pune) and Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) during December 14, 2018 - December 24, 2018. RPL provides facilities for teaching Radio Physics and Radio Astronomy techniques using simple hands on radio physics experiments. Its facilities includes Radio Telescope equipped with 21-cm Radio receivers, which can be used to observe Sun, Hydrogen Gas in our Galaxy and other Radio Sources. The laboratory is also equipped with radio receivers operating at 408 MHz, various test and measurement instruments and interesting laboratory experiments demonstrating fundamental principles of radio-physics.

Participation:

The winter school is largely meant for under-graduate students in Science pursuing B.Sc. or Engineering (B.E./B.Tech.) and in their 2nd or 3rd year. Students pursuing M.Sc. or in the final year of B.E./B.Tech. are not eligible to apply.

Programme:

The participants will get introduced to radio astronomy through a series of lectures. Our approach will be hands-on way of teaching radio astronomy. They will also get ample opportunity to carry out simple radio astronomy experiments and learn about operation of radio telescopes. A visit to Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) operated by NCRA will also be organized during the programme. They will also participate in informal group discussions.

Travel and Stay:

Outstation candidates will be paid II class (non A/C) train fare from place of correspondence to Pune and back.

The best mode of transport between IUCAA or NCRA-TIFR and the Pune railway station or bus stand is autorickshaw. The fare is as per the tariff card with the driver. During the day, the autorickshaw fare from Pune railway station to IUCAA or NCRA-TIFR will be about Rs. 120/-.
